IFPI statement on Maurice ObersteinLondon, August 15 - Maurice Oberstein ('Obie') was a member of the Board of IFPI from 1991 until 1993. He combined a sharp intellect and shrewd business sense with a unique and legendary sense of humour. He continued his association with IFPI during the 1990s, giving seminars to IFPI staff on the music business. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Jay Berman, Chairman and CEO of IFPI says, "He was one of a kind - a great executive and a great guy." Following MD and Chairman roles at CBS UK, Oberstein became CEO of PolyGram UK in 1985, leaving in 1993. He was Chairman of the British Phonographic Industry twice - from 1983 to 1985 and from 1991 to 1993. Oberstein died of leukemia in London, August 12, 2001. He was 72.
